The Tactical Pen

Gerber 31-001880_Not quite mightier than the sword. But useful none the less. There are many places that you cannot take a firearm or a knife. But there are very few places you cannot take a quality pen. Even one that doubles as a defensive weapon.

I’m one of those guys that just lives personal security. Born of a lifetime of the necessity to be constantly aware in order to protect either myself or current clients. There are many times and places that I cannot take a firearm and will have to rely on one of my quality knives. But there are even places that you cannot take a knife. Like on an aircraft. But there are very few places where you cannot have a quality pen. And there are company’s that make tactical pens that are designed to be tough enough to double as last ditch weapons used like a Kubotan in case you find yourself in a confrontation at bad breath range. Generally made of aircraft quality aluminum, they have very good ergonomic design and better than standard grip surfaces. TSA will probably not allow you to carry your Kubotan key chain on board, but they haven’t figured out how to ban quality pens. (yet).

Do I plan on foiling an airplane hijack with one? Nope. But they are a quality class act compared to the crappy plastic pens I use to acquire from various hotels I have stayed at. And if absolutely necessary, a poke in the eye, ear, throat or temple will definitely get someone’s undivided attention. One of my very few concessions to “Tacticool”.

  1. I carry one from Under Control Tactical that sometimes makes me shake my head at myself for wanting too much in a little package. Mine has an LED flashlight, glass breaker, and “DNA catcher.” The dang DNA catcher surrounds the lens of the flashlight and is sometimes catches me. The pen is well made, but so heavy and long with its add-ons that I keep it in my purse, instead of in a shirt or pants pocket.

  2. If you are close enough to use it, They are close enough to hurt you back.
And all they need to be is a bit faster, behind you, able to distract you, or just plain old lucky.

We had a spate of those in the 90’s when working security in bars and at the ferry terminals and airport lounges with the package holiday rabble.

Some of the guys got badly hurt too as they were always used as ambush weapons. As such they were almost impossible to stop as the blows came in FAST AND LOW just like a knife.

Eventually we just banned them with the full agreement of “The management”. They were easy to find as both the arch and wand detected them. If the punter wouldn’t surrender them to be enveloped and retained by the pursers till the end of the night/trip, they didn’t get in, fly, or board the ferry.
Was that legal? Probably not but what price safety.

Just remember that if you are the aggressor they are great (short term).
In self defense you will probably lose and what advantage you have in equipment or training is lost by letting a person get within your personal space.

      • No argument there.
Unfortunately we had to deal with alcohol, drugs, mental problems, and testosterone usually all at the same time. Us working “within the rules”.

So the law removing the advantage of simply night sticking the little sh’ts or using a taser. Open hand was all you have left. (That and dry powder fire extinguishers for those carrying steel or carbon fiber.)

It’s rather like gun control. Only the bad guys are allowed to carry and it’s amazing what the general public can smuggle in or turn into expedient weapons.

Having said that, it was thankfully the exception rather than the rule that weapons were used BUT I did hate the TV drama’s for putting ideas into jerk offs minds about what to carry.
